What is international human resource management?

International human resource management (IHRM) is the management of people in organisations that hire across borders or operate in more than one country. On top of everyday HR work such as recruitment, payroll and employee relations, international HR professionals deal with work visas and permits, each country's labour law, cross-border pay and benefits, and teams made up of many nationalities and cultures.

CCHRP (International HRM) is our international HR management course: it builds these skills on top of a solid HR foundation.

IHRM skills matter both for HR roles abroad and for HR roles in India at companies that recruit Indian talent for overseas employers.

What HR work in the Gulf involves

Many of our students aim for HR careers in the Gulf (GCC) countries. HR teams there typically handle:

  • Labour law and employment contracts: each country has its own labour law, such as the UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 and the Saudi Labour Law, covering contracts, working hours, leave and termination.
  • Visas, work permits and residence: processing employment visas, labour cards, residence permits, renewals and cancellations.
  • Nationalisation quotas: programmes such as Emiratisation in the UAE and Saudisation (Nitaqat) in Saudi Arabia require companies to employ a set share of nationals.
  • Payroll through the Wage Protection System (WPS): salaries in several GCC countries must be paid through approved channels so authorities can confirm workers are paid on time.
  • End-of-service gratuity: calculating the end-of-service benefit employees are owed when they leave, based on salary and length of service.
  • Insurance and social security: mandatory health insurance, and social insurance for national employees, such as GOSI in Saudi Arabia.
